Annual Civic services include:
The Mayor's Service
- Each year after the mayor making has taken place in Devizes Town
Hall the newly elected mayor and the Town Councillors come as a Council
to St John's Church to celebrate the occasion.
- There is a procession from the Town Hall to the church lead by
the Mayor's Mace Bearer and Cup Bearer and the Mayor is met at the
church door by the Rector and Churchwardens and escorted to the Mayor's
seat in the Corporation Stalls in the Norman Chancel of the church.
- It is a very grand occasion at which the ancient prayer of
Devizes is used and the community can commit the new political year to
God.
Remembrance Sunday
- St John's Church is the focal point in North Wiltshire for the
Annual Remembrance Day Commemoration.
- The Mayor & Council, the guests, often including the Lord
Lieutenant of the County, the High Sherriff and the Member of
Parliament for the Devizes constituency all come to St John's to give
thanks for the sacrifices made by those who died in the service of
their country.
